Project Turnaround.

About the programme.

In 2015 we piloted a new project called TurnAround. Its objective was to provide supported youth weekly volunteering in the form of a structured programme of equine-focused activity tailored specifically for the needs of young people aged 14-17 who are experiencing emotional, behavioural and social difficulties.

What we have found over the last four years is that with TurnAround, these children demonstrably improved in the attitudes and behaviours that underlie successful participation in education, work and the wider community. Building confidence, a sense of responsibility and self-discipline, respect and empathy, as well as a host of communication and social skills, TurnAround has helped the lives of many.

Project Outcomes.

Learn.

Young people with behavioural difficulties that put them at risk of exclusion from school or training will learn the life skills necessary to succeed on the road towards becoming happier and healthier young people.

Improve.

Participants will improve in attitudes and behaviours that underlie successful participation in education or work, from confidence and self-esteem to motivation and communication.

Gain Experience.

Participants will gain work experience, developing transferrable vocational skills as well as specific skills related to animal care, equine management, and engagement with disabled people.

Progress.

Participants will re-integrate into school life or, depending on age, make moves towards alternative positive destinations such as further vocational training or employment.

How it works.

What they do.

Participating youths attend at our yard and stables on a specified, dedicated day of the week for a day-long programme of activities for seven hours, including an hour-long recess for communal lunch with all helpers and staff. Working together as a group under the careful supervision of at least two qualified and dedicated activity coaches, the programme of activity extends to all aspects of yard work, stable management, horse handling, and equine care.

We have seen over the years that the extraordinarily high attendance and completion rates is fundamentally due to the growth of each participant over the course of the programme. Learning responsibility and empathy, building confidence and self-esteem, these young people become motivated and driven, with communication and social skills — qualities so inherent in the work we do.
